I Found a Way to Explain Winter Tires vs All-Seasons to Normal People

I do not know where this idea came from but I think I figured out how to explain the benefit of winter tires (use "winter" instead of "snow" to make things easier to understand).

All-season tires are like 2-in-1 shampoo/conditioner products.

Kinja'd!!!

Go ahead, take a shower, throw some in your hair, suds it up, rinse, get out. Hair is clean and good.

Now, try it again with shampoo and conditioner as two separate products.

Take a shower, throw some shampoo in your hair, suds it up, rinse, throw some conditioner in, rinse, get out. HAIR IS DAMN NEAR SOFT AS KITTEN FUR!

How does this relate to tires?

Kinja'd!!!

All-seasons are the 2-in-1 product of the wheel world. They get the job done but cannot compare to dedicated products such as winter wheels. Where they fall flat (like my hair when I use 2-in-1 cuz I'm a cheap bastard) winter wheels rise up and persevere (like my hair when I steal borrow some conditioner from my gf).

TL/DR: Tell people that winter wheels during the winter is like using actual conditioner for your hair instead of a compromise. You feel fabulous after using them.

This is a good analogy. Living in the south my all seasons do fine enough in the winter though. In situations like snow/ice everything is closed so there's no need to drive.

I don't think you have enough fur, though, to gain proper traction in a storm.

I'm really feeling the "tell-everyone-who-lives-in-sub-freezing-regions-about-the-benefit-of-winter-tires" thing today.

Naysayers are usually convinced pretty easily when they watch me back out of a parking spot/driveway with over 6" of snow behind me without slipping or getting stuck.

That tends to shut people up pretty quick.

Leading by example works well. I tend to drive in poor weather situations so it was demonstrated quickly last year...not so many opportunities this year.

However, my buddy got some winter tires and wheels this year so that's a small victory.

well, I guess I need all-seasons then because anytime I use dedicated conditioner, I always feel really greasy, and then I just hate it so much I wash it out. :P

I use 3-in-1 suave mens shampoo because its 2.70 for a bottle that lasts me like a month, and it has body wash in it. SUCK IT :)

My thoughts

"Why is there a picture of my shampoo on oppo?"

"So it's shampoo then condition?"

this is what I use, its 2.70 for a 27 oz bottle at walmart, I don't really give a crap about my hair and body other than keeping them clean, to me there is no point in spending 15 bucks on a bottle of stuff thats in your hair for 30 seconds before you wash it down the drain.

My boyfriend has the 3-in-1 as well, but has confessed to stealing my fancy salon shampoo and conditioner for the added silkiness and good smells. If you're not heat treating your hair on a regular basis though, you probably don't need it. Especially when it's running me $20/bottle >:(

the only treatment my hair ever gets is getting cut and being washed in the shower.

I was trying to explain it to a girl who used to work for me a few years ago. Normal refrain of "I've driven X amount of years on normal tires without a problem" to my normal response "Tread pattern, siping, rubber compound blah blah blah".

Suddenly I see the lightbulb go off in her head. 'So they're like shoes?'

Me: 'Uh, yeah I guess'

Her: 'Like, I could wear just some normal work flats to go on a long hike down a muddy trail. I'd probably make it fine, but I could avoid risking rolling my ankle and slipping around by having some good hiking boots. I get it now'.

So that's how I always explain it.

I've driven through inches of snow in my all-seasons as well. I didn't really enjoy it. Were you able to stop on a dime, take a left from a complete stop without sliding, and not spin your tires even once?

Because that was my commute on that morning and it was pretty glorious.

Like I said, no idea where the idea came from.

And I think that's what the instructions said...but I was reading the bottle after having gotten bubbles in my eyes and it stung so much I just started making assumption sabout what to do. I think I'm getting it right, though the cat doesn't seem to be as effective a loofa as the directions suggest.

no I can't say that, its one reason why i now have great all seasons which are rated very high in the snow, which I expect to be a massive improvement this year.

I don't have the extra money for an extra set of tires, most people don't.

Smart driving and paying attention are key.

Last year on crappy all seasons I drove past countless 4x4's in ditches because they drove like idiots. There were even trucks down there that had 4x4 and solid All Terrain tires.

I don't need to enjoy driving in snow, I'm not white knuckling the steering wheel praying to god I can stop in time tho - I've never had that situation in this car.

So far this winter on the new tires (General AltiMAX RT43's in case you're wondering) I've been able to stop like normal, take lefts like normal. I have spun my tires but not in a way that I wasn't able to say that maybe I should have been a bit more gentle with the pedal on that take off.
